Ever heard anyone say, ‘Never judge entrepreneurs by their age’? Ryan Hickman, 7-year-old CEO, founder, and manager of Ryan’s Recycling Company verifies this truth by having over 50 customers, 200,000 bottles and cans in his recycling credit, and $11,000 in his college account!
How it all began
At 3½ years old, Ryan found his life mission during a visit to the rePlanet Recycling Centre, California. Though he doesn’t clearly remember telling his Dad, Damion Hickman that his ‘new business’ will be picking up all the cans and bottles in the neighbourhood, Ryan says that he chose recycling ‘because bottles get to the ocean and then animals get sick and die’.
…and 4 years after
Ryan looks forward to buying a full-size trash truck but has expanded his operations by recruiting 5 of his friends, Mr Jose (a janitor), and his dad, who drives the ‘goods’ to the recycling centre and help in sorting them out. Also, he donates all his T-shirt proceedings, worth over $3,700, to the Pacific Marine Mammal Centre.
Truly entrepreneurship is timeless and it is never too early to become an entrepreneur!
